About
Within the bustling city of Omdurman across the White Nile from Khartoum, Masjid Jamaat Ansar al Sunna al Muhammadiyya, known affectionately among locals as Masjid al Rahman, provides a quiet place of worship and a centre of Islamic learning for the surrounding neighbourhood. Omdurman itself holds a special place in Sudanese history as the capital of the Mahdist state founded by Muhammad Ahmad in the late nineteenth century, and today it remains the most populous of the three towns that make up the Khartoum metropolitan area. Its covered souq, camel market, and traditional artisan workshops are famous far beyond the country's borders. The city of Omdurman was known across the Muslim world for the teaching circles of scholars who preserved the Qur'an and the Prophetic narrations during the colonial era. Graduates of its religious schools later carried their knowledge across the Sahel, founding mosques and schools in places as distant as Kano, Maiduguri, and Khartoum North. Every new mosque built in Omdurman, including this one, inherits something of that educational mission, honouring the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) whose Sunnah they teach and the Companions (may God be pleased with them) whose example they follow. Architecturally, the mosque reflects traditional Nilotic practice. Mud brick walls plastered smooth and painted white, a modest minaret that carries the adhan across the date palms and flat roofed houses of the quarter, arched windows with wooden shutters, and a spacious tiled courtyard with an ablution fountain welcome worshippers. Inside, reed mats and patterned carpets cover the floor, a simple mihrab points north toward Makkah, and a small library of classical texts occupies a side room where evening study circles gather. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Masjid al Rahman in Omdurman, its address, a map, and visitor notes useful to residents and Sudanese travellers are offered on this page. Omdurman is known globally for the whirling dervishes at the Hamed al Nil tomb on Friday afternoons, the confluence of the Blue and White Niles, and the vast Omdurman Souq where silver, ebony, and sandalwood scent the air. After Maghrib, worshippers here often remain for informal discussions of Qur'anic tafsir, sipping glasses of strong sweet tea while the Sudanese night falls quietly across the ancient course of the Nile.
