Nestled in the old neighbourhood of Sayedpur within the historic river port of Narayanganj near Dhaka in Bangladesh, the Puratan Sayedpur Sardar Bari Jame Masjid serves as a venerated centre of worship for generations of families connected to the Sardar Bari lineage, a traditional headman's household whose ancestral hall gives the mosque its identifying name. Narayanganj grew in the nineteenth century as a thriving jute and textile port along the Shitalakshya river, earning the nickname the Dundee of the East for its booming industry, and today its densely packed alleys, warehouses, and shipyards continue to hum with commerce.
