Nestled in the old neighbourhood of Sayedpur within the historic river port of Narayanganj near Dhaka in Bangladesh, the Puratan Sayedpur Sardar Bari Jame Masjid serves as a venerated centre of worship for generations of families connected to the Sardar Bari lineage, a traditional headman's household whose ancestral hall gives the mosque its identifying name. Narayanganj grew in the nineteenth century as a thriving jute and textile port along the Shitalakshya river, earning the nickname the Dundee of the East for its booming industry, and today its densely packed alleys, warehouses, and shipyards continue to hum with commerce. The Dhaka division has cradled Islamic civilisation in the eastern Bengal region for many centuries, with celebrated mosques such as Sat Gambuj, Star Mosque, and Baitul Mukarram national mosque testifying to a continuing devotion that reaches back to the early conquests of the thirteenth century and the luminous presence of saints such as Shah Jalal. Architecturally the Puratan Sayedpur Sardar Bari Masjid displays a traditional Bengali mosque style, with white rendered walls, multiple small domes above the prayer hall, terracotta ornamentation around the mihrab niches, and corner minarets whose silhouettes evoke the Mughal influenced design of eighteenth and nineteenth century Bengal. Inside, the hall is cooled by ceiling fans, the floors covered with deep green carpets, and the mihrab decorated with floral calligraphic panels. Daily prayers gather rickshaw pullers, river boatmen, shopkeepers, garment factory workers, and elders from the Sardar Bari families. The Friday khutbah is delivered in Bengali with Arabic citations, invoking the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and treating themes of patience and honest livelihood. Ramadan brings iftars of haleem, muri, dates, jilapi, and sweet lassi. The two Eids fill the surrounding lane with celebration. Travellers can combine the visit with the Sonakanda Fort and Langalbandh along the Shitalakshya riverbanks nearby. The imam leads weekly tafsir circles and a Quran memorisation programme for children whose parents work in the nearby garment mills. Charitable distributions of rice, lentils, and winter blankets support elderly widows and destitute families in the surrounding alleys. Women's study circles gather in a shaded side hall, and the Sardar Bari family continues to fund mosque maintenance as part of their ancestral waqf obligation. Travellers arriving by boat along the Shitalakshya river find the mosque a welcome refuge for ablution and prayer during their journey between Dhaka and the wider Bengal Delta region nearby.
