Along the slopes of Wadi Adai in the southeastern outskirts of Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman, the grand jami masjid of the valley gathers worshippers in a setting shaped by the remarkable heritage of Omani religious architecture. Muscat has served as a major port on the Gulf of Oman for well over two thousand years, and its Islamic history stretches back to the earliest years of the faith, for Oman sent a delegation to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, during his lifetime and accepted Islam peacefully through the letter of Amr ibn al As, may God be pleased with him. The country has preserved a distinctive religious tradition ever since.

Wadi Adai is a suburb nestled in a dry valley between the rocky hills that divide the old port of Muscat from the modern districts of the capital. For many centuries small villages farmed dates, limes, and alfalfa along the water channels cut into the rock, known in Oman as aflaj, a UNESCO recognised irrigation system that distributes water with remarkable fairness among neighbours. The grand mosque of the valley connects this rural past with the lives of today's commuters who travel each morning to offices in Ruwi, Muttrah, and Qurum.

Omani mosque architecture is immediately recognisable. Walls of pale stone or plaster enclose a square or rectangular prayer hall, the mihrab is often richly carved with geometric and floral patterns, ceilings are decorated in the distinctive Omani style of carved gypsum, and minarets are often short and square topped by a small dome. The interior is kept immaculately clean, and the call to prayer is sounded in the unhurried, dignified rhythm beloved throughout the Sultanate. Worshippers arrive for the five daily prayers in traditional Omani dress, the dishdasha and kummah cap or musar turban, and exchange greetings of peace at the door.

On this page, visitors will find accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the grand Wadi Adai Mosque, along with its address, a clear map, and notes that help residents of the Muscat governorate, commuters arriving from Seeb or Bawshar, travellers visiting the historic forts and museums of the capital, and pilgrims enjoying Oman's long coastline to attend congregational worship with the calm, gracious hospitality that is the hallmark of Omani Islamic culture in every season.
