Multan, one of the most ancient continuously inhabited cities of the subcontinent, is known as the city of saints for the dense web of shrines that punctuate its narrow lanes, and its mystical tradition has shaped the devotional life of southern Punjab for more than a thousand years. The Darbar Syed Ahmed Saeed Shah Kazmi Sarkar honours a twentieth century Multani scholar of the Kazmi lineage, whose teaching, poetry and spiritual guidance drew devotees from across Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and beyond. The term darbar, meaning court, refers in the subcontinent to the complex of shrine, mosque, langar kitchen and teaching hall that typically surrounds the tomb of a revered figure, while the honorific sarkar reflects the deep love and respect in which he was held. Multan's Islamic heritage includes the shrines of Shah Rukn e Alam with its magnificent Tughlaq era dome, Baha ud Din Zakariya the thirteenth century founder of the Suhrawardiyya tradition in the subcontinent, Shams e Tabriz and Shah Shams Sabzwari, each of whom shaped devotional life across generations. Architecturally the Darbar combines a tomb chamber of carved brickwork crowned by a tiled dome with a congregational masjid for the five daily prayers and the Friday sermon, a langar kitchen serving free meals to visitors and a sama hall for Qur'anic recitation and qawwali gatherings. Inside, the mihrab is framed by blue Multani tile work, the mimbar is carved from sheesham wood and the carpet is laid in deep crimson patterned with medallions. Daily prayers gather visitors and local residents alike, Jumu'ah khutbah is delivered in Urdu with Arabic Qur'anic recitation and Ramadan evenings bring tarawih, langar iftar and late night dhikr gatherings. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes at the threshold, cover the head out of respect for the shrine and offer a quiet supplication for the soul of the saintly figure. Landmarks within reach include the Shah Rukn e Alam tomb, the Multan fort with its ancient Prahladpuri ruins, the Hussain Agahi bazaar famous for its camel leather goods and the Ghanta Ghar clock tower marking the old city centre. An adjoining calligraphy studio, maintained by a khattat trained in Lahore, produces ijazah certified copies of devotional panels for pilgrims who visit the Darbar, and the intricately painted and gilded pieces, signed by the artist, are treasured keepsakes carried home by devotees to Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and beyond as cherished reminders.
