Tentang
Along the gentle Komering and Ogan rivers in the Muarakuang district of Ogan Ilir regency, South Sumatra, Indonesia, Masjid Al Husain in Tabang Ilir village welcomes a community of Palembang Malay farmers, fishermen, and rubber tappers for the five daily prayers. South Sumatra has been Muslim since the arrival of Islam along the great maritime trade routes of the Indian Ocean, and the ancient kingdom of Palembang, once capital of the Buddhist Srivijaya empire, became the seat of a flourishing Malay sultanate under Sultan Muhammad Mansur Jayo Ing Lago in the seventeenth century.
The name al Husain honours the noble grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, son of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima al Zahra, may God be pleased with them. Imam al Husain stood at Karbala on the tenth of Muharram in the year sixty one after the hijra, refusing to give his hand in allegiance to an unjust ruler, and was martyred alongside his household and companions. His noble stand has inspired believers across the Muslim world ever since, and Indonesian Muslims honour him deeply through commemorations during the sacred month of Muharram.
Tabang Ilir village itself lies along the tropical lowlands where rice paddies stretch between rubber plantations, and canoes glide between reed banks during the seasonal floods. The masjid offers the villagers a gathering place for the daily call to prayer, for the weekly Friday khutbah delivered in a mixture of Indonesian and Palembang Malay, and for remembrance gatherings on Thursday evenings where verses of the Qur'an are recited in the flowing Sumatran style.
Architecturally, the building weaves Sumatran vernacular elements with modern concrete. A tiered pyramidal roof recalls traditional Palembang mosques, wide verandahs shelter shoes from the tropical rain, a painted mihrab faces the Ka'bah across the Indian Ocean, and a slender minaret carries the adhan across the fields. This page lists accurate prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Masjid Al Husain, along with the Tabang Ilir address and practical notes for visitors arriving from Palembang by the Trans Sumatra highway, from the Musi riverside walk with its famous Ampera Bridge, or from the ancient Buddhist archaeological sites at Bukit Siguntang. During Ramadan the courtyard fills with tables of pempek fish cakes, tekwan soup, and sweet kue srikaya shared generously. Qur'an recitation classes continue for the village children, and Muharram evenings echo with heartfelt supplications. Any traveller journeying through the heart of South Sumatra is warmly invited to pause here, pray with the gentle villagers, and send salawat upon the noble household of the Messenger whose love has reached even these green lowlands with such a tender and enduring grace.
