Tentang

Beside the cotton fields and sugar cane plantations of Manfalut, a historic town on the western bank of the Nile in the Asyut governorate of Upper Egypt, this neighbourhood mosque serves local farmers, shopkeepers, and families with the daily rhythm of five prayers. Manfalut itself has been continuously inhabited since Pharaonic times and was mentioned by medieval Muslim geographers as a prosperous agricultural centre along the river, famous for its grain stores and its weekly livestock market. The town gave its name to the celebrated twentieth century Egyptian writer Mustafa Lutfi al Manfaluti, whose literary reflections on patience, mercy, and Islamic ethics became beloved across the Arab world.

Asyut governorate more broadly has produced many respected scholars and preachers, and its mosques sit comfortably among date palm groves, mud brick houses, and modern concrete residential blocks. The long standing pattern of village life revolves around the fields, the market, the school, and the masjid, with the five daily prayers framing every activity from dawn to night.

The prayer hall itself is a modest building with whitewashed walls, a single minaret, a small dome above the mihrab, and louvred windows on two sides that draw cool evening breezes from the Nile. Inside, the floor is spread with long woven prayer rugs over tiled flooring, the mihrab is simply finished with calligraphic panels bearing the shahada, and a plain wooden minbar stands beside it. A shelf at the rear holds copies of the Qur'an and pamphlets of supplications for the worshippers.

Daily congregations gather farmers returning from irrigated fields in their galabiyyas, schoolteachers, shopkeepers, and elders who have prayed here for decades. Friday khutbahs are delivered in classical Arabic mixed with Upper Egyptian dialect, often dwelling on themes of honesty in trade, patience with family, and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and of his noble companions, may God be pleased with them. Travellers exploring the ancient tombs of Meir, the Coptic monasteries of Asyut, or the narrow streets of the old Manfalut market will find precise daily prayer times listed here and a welcoming congregation at any hour of the day.
