Within the Al Iskan housing quarter of Manama, the capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain, worshippers gather at a masjid dedicated to Imam al Mahdi al Muntadhar, the awaited guide whose return is anticipated by Muslims of many backgrounds as a sign of the final age before the Day of Judgment. Bahrain, whose name means the two seas where sweet underground springs meet the salty waters of the Arabian Gulf, has hosted Islamic worship since the delegation of Abdul Qais, may God be pleased with them, presented themselves before the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, in Medina during the early years of the Islamic calendar.
The Al Iskan neighbourhood, whose name simply means housing in Arabic, grew out of the modern urban planning that reshaped Manama in the second half of the twentieth century, as the city expanded beyond the old walls of the historical suq and the coral stone merchant houses of the pearl diving era. Within such planned quarters every residential cluster traditionally receives its own small masjid so that no family is more than a few minutes' walk from the adhan, and this mosque plays that intimate role for its surrounding streets.
Architecturally, the building reflects modern Bahraini preferences. Cream coloured masonry, a single slender minaret, a modest dome above the prayer hall, air conditioning against the fierce Gulf summer, and wide wudu stations shaded from the sun combine to offer a cool refuge at every prayer time. Calligraphic panels around the mihrab cite verses of the Qur'an that console the believer awaiting divine justice, while a small library in an adjoining room holds volumes on tafsir, hadith, seerah, and the classical biographies of the noble household of the Prophet.
The present page lists accurate prayer timings for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the masjid, together with the Manama address and travel notes for visitors arriving from Muharraq airport, from the Bahrain World Trade Centre, or from the old Bab al Bahrain gate at the edge of the suq. The congregation observes the nights of Ramadan with lengthy supplications, and during Muharram the masjid hosts gatherings in memory of the noble grandson of the Prophet and his companions at Karbala, may God be pleased with them. Travellers to this island kingdom are invited to pray here with warm hearts, to greet the neighbours kindly, and to carry home the quiet serenity that rises like sea mist from every corner of Bahrain at dusk.
