About
Mesjid Fatima in Makassar honors the name of Fatimah az-Zahra, the beloved daughter of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family, and one of the most revered women in Islamic history. Fatimah, whose epithet az-Zahra means the Radiant, is honored across Muslim traditions as a model of piety, patience, and devotion. She was the mother of Hasan and Husayn, the grandchildren whom the Prophet deeply loved, and the wife of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth rightly-guided caliph. Fatimah holds particular significance in Shia tradition, where she is regarded as one of the five members of the Ahl al-Bayt, the blessed family of the Prophet, and her life and sayings are carefully preserved and commemorated. She is also revered across Sunni Islam as one of the four greatest women in the history of humanity according to prophetic tradition, alongside Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Maryam the mother of Isa peace be upon him, and Asiyah the wife of Pharaoh who believed in Musa peace be upon him. Naming a mosque Fatimah honors this exemplary woman whose life demonstrates the heights of spiritual devotion, filial love, and marital partnership in Islamic tradition. Makassar's Mesjid Fatimah serves its neighborhood with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and the full calendar of Islamic observances. Facilities typically include an ablution area, a main prayer hall oriented toward the qiblah, a separate women's prayer area, classrooms for Quran instruction, and administrative offices. The mosque follows the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers, kuliah shubuh lectures, iftar meals served communally, and Quran reading programs. Eid prayers on Idul Fitri and Idul Adha bring large, festively dressed congregations. The mosque coordinates Qurbani sacrifices on Idul Adha. Weekend TPA programs teach children Quran, Arabic letters, and stories of the prophets peace be upon them all and of exemplary women including Fatimah az-Zahra, cultivating reverence for the noble women of Islamic history among new generations. The mosque hosts particular devotional gatherings on dates associated with Fatimah az-Zahra's life including her birthday and the anniversary of her death, when community members gather to recite prayers, listen to lectures about her exemplary character, and reflect on the lessons her life offers for contemporary Muslim women seeking models of faith and spiritual excellence.
