Mesjid Al-Nur in Makassar takes its name from An-Nur, meaning The Light, one of the ninety-nine beautiful names of Allah and the title of the twenty-fourth chapter of the Holy Quran. The famous Ayat an-Nur within this surah describes Allah as the Light of the heavens and the earth, comparing His light to a niche containing a lamp within a glass that glows with the brilliance of a star, lit from the blessed oil of an olive tree neither eastern nor western, whose oil would almost shine even without fire. This verse has inspired Muslim thinkers, mystics, and artists throughout the centuries, particularly influencing mosque architecture and the design of mosque lamps. Naming a mosque Al-Nur evokes this profound Quranic imagery and expresses the aspiration to be a place of divine light in the community. Makassar's Mesjid Al-Nur serves its neighborhood with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and the full calendar of Islamic observances. Facilities typically include an ablution area, a main prayer hall oriented toward the qiblah in Makkah, a separate women's prayer area, classrooms for Quran instruction, and administrative offices. The mosque follows the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence predominating Indonesian Muslim practice. The imam leads the five daily prayers and delivers Friday khutbahs in Indonesian and sometimes Makassarese or Buginese. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers drawing capacity crowds each evening, kuliah shubuh lectures after fajr prayers, communal iftar meals featuring traditional Indonesian and Makassarese dishes, and Quran reading programs aimed at completing the entire holy text. The eve of Idul Fitri features takbir keliling processions through the streets, with children and adults proclaiming the greatness of Allah with drums and torches. Eid prayers on Idul Fitri and Idul Adha bring large, festively dressed congregations wearing traditional attire. The mosque coordinates Qurbani sacrifices on Idul Adha, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, peace be upon them both, and distributes meat to needy families in the neighborhood. Weekend TPA programs teach children Quran recitation, Arabic letters, and Islamic foundations.
