About
Mesjid Abdurrahman in Makassar honors the name Abdurrahman, which in Arabic means the servant of the Most Merciful, combining abd meaning servant with Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful, one of the ninety-nine beautiful names of Allah. Ar-Rahman appears as the opening of Surah Al-Fatiha, the first chapter of the Holy Quran recited in every prayer, and signifies the all-encompassing mercy of Allah that extends to all creation. The name Abdurrahman has been borne by countless Muslims throughout history including the famous companion of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, Abdurrahman ibn Awf, one of the ten companions promised paradise during their lifetime and a wealthy merchant who contributed generously to the early Muslim community. Naming a mosque Abdurrahman thus may honor this specific companion or may simply reflect the desire to dedicate the mosque to the service of Allah's mercy. Makassar's Mesjid Abdurrahman serves its neighborhood with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and the full calendar of Islamic observances. Facilities typically include an ablution area, a main prayer hall oriented toward the qiblah in Makkah, a separate women's prayer area, classrooms for Quran instruction, and administrative offices. The mosque follows the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence predominating Indonesian Muslim practice. The imam leads the five daily prayers and delivers Friday khutbahs in Indonesian and sometimes regional Sulawesi languages, addressing themes of faith, the cultivation of mercy in human relationships following the divine attribute Ar-Rahman, and ethical conduct in family and civic life. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers drawing capacity crowds, kuliah shubuh lectures after fajr, communal iftar meals featuring traditional Indonesian dishes, and intensive Quran reading programs. Eid prayers on the mornings of Idul Fitri and Idul Adha bring large, festively dressed congregations. The mosque coordinates Qurbani sacrifices on Idul Adha. Weekend TPA programs teach children Quran recitation with proper tajweed, Arabic letters, stories of the prophets peace be upon them all, and the foundations of Islamic ethics, with particular emphasis on the cultivation of mercy and compassion in daily life.
