About

Masjid Quba in Makassar takes its name from the original Masjid Quba in Madinah, the first mosque established in Islamic history during the migration of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, from Makkah to Madinah. When the Prophet arrived at the outskirts of Madinah at a place called Quba, he stayed with the local Muslim community for several days and personally helped construct a simple mosque there before continuing into the main town. The original Masjid Quba holds special spiritual significance, mentioned in the Holy Quran as having been built on piety from the very first day and praised in hadith where the Prophet is reported to have regularly visited it, saying that praying two rakats there is equivalent to performing an umrah. Naming a mosque Quba thus connects the congregation to the very foundations of Islamic mosque tradition and to the exemplary faith of those first Madinan Muslims who welcomed the Prophet and his companions. Makassar's Masjid Quba serves its neighborhood with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and the full calendar of Islamic observances that animate Indonesian Muslim life. Facilities typically include an ablution area, a main prayer hall oriented toward the qiblah in Makkah, a separate women's prayer area, classrooms for Quran instruction, and administrative offices. The mosque follows the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence predominating Indonesian Muslim practice. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant with tarawih prayers drawing capacity crowds each evening, iftar meals served communally featuring traditional Indonesian dishes, kuliah shubuh lectures after fajr prayers, and Quran reading programs. The eve of Idul Fitri features takbir keliling processions through the streets, with children and adults proclaiming the greatness of Allah. Eid prayers on the mornings of Idul Fitri and Idul Adha bring large, festively dressed congregations wearing traditional Muslim attire, followed by traditional greetings of forgiveness and visits between family and neighbors. The mosque coordinates Qurbani sacrifices on Idul Adha, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, peace be upon them both.
