Masjid Halimatussadiyah in Makassar bears the name of Halimah as-Sa'diyah, the woman who served as wet nurse and foster mother to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, during his infancy and early childhood. According to the traditional biography of the Prophet, Halimah was a woman of the Banu Sa'd tribe who came to Makkah seeking a child to nurse according to the pre-Islamic Arabian custom whereby newborns were sent to desert foster mothers to benefit from the cleaner air, simpler food, and more robust environment of Bedouin life. She initially overlooked the orphaned Muhammad before reluctantly accepting him, but she subsequently experienced abundant blessings in her family and livestock that she attributed to his presence. The young Muhammad spent several years with Halimah and her family in the desert, forming bonds that lasted throughout his life. Halimah is thus remembered and honored in Islamic tradition as the foster mother who cared for the Prophet in his earliest years, and naming a mosque after her honors her role in the Prophet's life and her example of motherly care. Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, hosts a substantial Muslim community whose Islamic heritage traces to the seventeenth century conversion of the local Buginese and Makassarese peoples. The mosque serves its neighborhood with the five daily prayers, Friday jumu'ah services, and the full calendar of Islamic observances that animate Indonesian Muslim life. Facilities typically include an ablution area, a main prayer hall with carpeted floors oriented toward the qiblah, a separate women's prayer area, classrooms for Quran instruction, and administrative offices. The mosque follows the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence. During Ramadan, the mosque becomes especially vibrant, with tarawih prayers, iftar meals served communally, and Quran reading programs. Eid prayers bring large, festively dressed congregations. Weekend TPA programs teach children Quran, Arabic letters, stories of the prophets peace be upon them all, and the foundations of Islamic ethics, often with particular emphasis on the importance of honoring parents and caregivers as exemplified by the Prophet's love for Halimah.
