Madinat Isa, the planned Bahraini town named in honour of Shaykh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa whose long reign oversaw the modernisation of the kingdom, spreads across the Northern governorate and houses this mosque dedicated to Imam Hasan al Askari, may God be pleased with him, an early descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, whose memory is held in deep affection across much of the Muslim world. Bahrain's Islamic heritage is remarkably layered, stretching from the letter the Prophet sent to al Mundhir bin Sawa, the ruler of the islands who accepted the faith before the Prophet's passing, through the Qarmatian period, the Jabrid dynasty and the later Al Khalifa era. The kingdom's scholarly tradition includes figures such as Shaykh Maytham al Bahrani and Shaykh Yusuf al Bahrani, whose writings in jurisprudence and philosophy travelled widely across the Muslim world. Architecturally the Askari mosque combines pale limestone cladding with a large central dome tiled in turquoise, a single slender minaret finished in matching ceramic and arcades of pointed arches that shade the entrance from the Gulf sun. Inside, the mihrab is lined with cobalt ceramic, the mimbar rises in carved cedar steps and the carpet is laid in deep emerald marked with pale medallions. A dedicated women's section opens from the eastern side. Daily prayers follow the times published by the relevant authority, Jumu'ah khutbah is delivered in classical Arabic and during Muharram the mosque becomes a focus for majalis commemorating the tragedy of Karbala, with marsiya and nauha recited through the first ten nights. Ramadan evenings bring tarawih, iftar tables laid across the courtyard and qiyam nights. Eid mornings draw families in freshly pressed thobes, and sweet Bahraini halwa is shared afterwards. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes on the angled racks and speak with quiet respect. Landmarks within reach include the Qal'at al Bahrain archaeological site, the Beit al Qur'an museum, the Bahrain National Museum and the old date palm groves of A'ali where burial mounds record millennia of continuous Bahraini habitation. The madrasah adjoining the mosque teaches Qur'anic recitation to more than one hundred children every afternoon, and its graduates regularly win places in the kingdom's national tajwid competitions, a quiet source of pride for the residents of Madinat Isa who watch their local huffaz recite on television with gentle parental smiles.
