Tentang
Serving the students and teachers of the Dayah Bustanul Aulad, founded by Fata Abu Haji Abdul Hamid, this mushala sits in the village of Lambaro in Aceh Besar district just outside Banda Aceh, the historic Islamic capital of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The term dayah corresponds to the Acehnese Islamic boarding school, known in other parts of Indonesia as pesantren, and has shaped the religious life of Aceh for many centuries, producing scholars, judges, and community leaders whose names are remembered with deep affection among the mountain villages and coastal rice paddies of the Serambi Mekah.
Bustanul Aulad, the Garden of Children, is a poetic name chosen to describe the classroom spaces where young Acehnese boys and girls gather to learn the Qur'an, the basics of Arabic grammar, and the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, alongside the national curriculum of Indonesian primary and secondary education. The dayah combines religious and secular learning in a gentle rhythm, with morning studies in fiqh and Qur'an flowing into afternoon lessons in mathematics, Indonesian language, and geography.
Haji Abdul Hamid, whose name honours the founding elder of the institution, represents the beloved figure of the Tengku, or village teacher, who devotes a lifetime to the patient instruction of children. Aceh lost many such teachers in the catastrophic tsunami of 26 December 2004, and the rebuilding of dayahs and mushalas across the province has been one of the most moving chapters of the region's recovery, supported by donations from every corner of the Muslim world.
The mushala itself is modest, with pale walls, a tile floor cool against the tropical heat, an open lattice that admits the breeze, a simple mihrab facing the Ka'bah across the Indian Ocean, and space for perhaps a hundred worshippers during the five daily prayers and Friday khutbah. This page provides accurate prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the mushala, together with the Lambaro address and practical notes for visitors arriving from the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in central Banda Aceh, from the tsunami museum with its dramatic architectural tribute, or from the ferry terminal at Ulee Lheue leading to the island of Sabang. Ramadan evenings fill the mushala courtyard with plates of kanji rumbi porridge, mie caluek noodles, and sweet timphan cakes shared by neighbours. Any traveller passing through the northernmost tip of Sumatra is warmly invited to step inside, to pray with the grateful Acehnese congregation, and to remember in their supplications the martyrs of the great wave whose silent patience continues to shelter the living souls of this steadfast province.
