Tentang

Within the riverside city of Kuching, capital of Sarawak on the Malaysian side of the island of Borneo, Surau Darul Munawwar in the neighbourhood of Kampung Bunga Siantan serves the daily religious needs of its local Malay Muslim community. A surau is a smaller house of prayer that complements the central masjid, hosting the five daily prayers and community programmes while worshippers typically travel to the larger masjid for Friday jumu'ah. Sarawak is one of the most culturally diverse states of Malaysia, home to Malays, Ibans, Bidayuhs, Chinese, Indians and many smaller indigenous groups, and its Muslim community reflects this rich mix with mosques and suraus scattered along the mighty Sarawak river and its tributaries.

The name Darul Munawwar means the illuminated abode, a poetic reference to the light of faith and the blessings of Quranic recitation that fill a prayer house. Kampung Bunga Siantan is a quiet neighbourhood named after the siantan flower, a tropical bloom treasured in Malay village gardens for its deep red petals. The surau itself is a modest single storey timber building in the classical Malay architectural idiom, raised slightly on concrete piers to cope with the occasional flooding of the nearby river, with a pitched tile roof and broad overhanging eaves that shade the windows from the tropical rain and sun.

An ablution pavilion along one side of the building offers ample taps, a long marble bench for seating during wudu and a steady supply of cool water drawn from a local well. A short flight of wooden steps leads to the entrance, where shoe racks line the small porch. Inside, the single prayer hall is floored with polished dark hardwood overlaid by pale green carpets, and the mihrab is faced in plain white tile with a simple calligraphic inscription of the opening chapter of the Quran. A wooden minbar of meranti wood stands beside it, carved in the soft floral style typical of Sarawak Malay craftsmanship.

The congregation includes families who have lived in Kampung Bunga Siantan for generations, younger Malays who have returned to the kampung after urban employment and a few Indonesian labourers working on construction projects in the area. The imam delivers short exhortations after each daily prayer on practical themes such as neighbourly care, honest trade and the education of children. Children's Quran classes run every evening after maghrib, and during Ramadan the community assembles for tarawih and simple iftar meals of rice, fish curry, ulam and kuih prepared by the surau committee. Travellers visiting Kuching's riverside markets are invited to pray here and sample the gentle Sarawak welcome.
