Tentang

Serving the village community of Kampung Sekambal, near Kuching in the state of Sarawak on Borneo, Masjid Darul Ikhwanil Muslimin gathers worshippers within one of the oldest continuously inhabited Muslim Malay regions of the great island. The name Darul Ikhwanil Muslimin means the Abode of Muslim Brothers, and it expresses the community's deep attachment to the Qur'anic description of believers as brothers and sisters in faith, bound by ties stronger than blood. Every person entering the masjid is reminded that, as the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught, believers are to one another like a single body whose pain is felt in every limb when any part is hurt.

Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia and the homeland of the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Malay, Chinese, and many other peoples. Islam reached the island of Borneo through Muslim traders and teachers from the fifteenth century onward, and the Malay communities of coastal Sarawak gradually built a rich religious life centred on riverside mosques, village suraus, and Qur'anic schools. The Brooke era rajas and later British administration preserved traditional Malay religious institutions, and after Malaysian independence the state government continued to support mosque building in rural kampungs such as Sekambal.

The building follows the characteristic Sarawakian mosque style. A tiered roof evokes the traditional Malay house, louvred wooden walls allow tropical breezes to pass through the prayer hall, a raised floor of polished hardwood supports rows of prayer mats, and a small ablution area with running water sits beside the entrance. A modest minaret crowned with a bulbous finial rises above the coconut palms, and on Fridays the khutbah is delivered in Malay, with verses of the Qur'an recited in Arabic. During Ramadan villagers gather in the courtyard for communal iftars that often include river fish, rice cooked in bamboo, and coconut sweets.

This page provides accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at Masjid Darul Ikhwanil Muslimin in Kampung Sekambal, together with its address, a location map, and notes that help Kuching residents, long boat travellers along the Sarawak rivers, researchers of Bornean Islamic heritage, and guests from across Malaysia and Brunei, to attend congregational worship here with the particular warmth of a Sarawakian kampung welcome offered to every visitor who steps onto the polished wooden floor of its prayer hall.
