Tentang
Within the Samarahan campus of Universiti Teknologi Mara Sarawak, the Masjid al Qurawiyyin provides a place of worship for students, lecturers and staff of one of East Malaysia's leading institutions of higher learning. Its name recalls the University of al Qarawiyyin in Fez, founded in 859 by Fatima al Fihri, may God have mercy upon her, which holds the distinction of being the longest continuously running place of higher learning, and a touchstone of Islamic intellectual heritage. By borrowing this venerable name, the university mosque situates itself within a long tradition of teaching institutions where jurisprudence, astronomy, medicine, philosophy and the religious sciences flourished side by side. Sarawak, the largest state of Malaysia, occupies the north west of Borneo and has been Muslim since the fourteenth century arrival of traders and preachers whose gentle methods are recorded in local hikayats. The Islamic heritage of the state blends Malay, Melanau, Kedayan and Javanese currents with contemporary institutional life. The regional architectural tradition of the Malay world favours multi tiered pyramidal roofs, timber columns and fretwork, airy serambi verandahs, and discreet green domes. In contemporary campus architecture these motifs are adapted with concrete and glass while preserving the orientation toward the qibla and the open air courtyards for overflow prayer. the mosque runs all five daily prayers that structure the student day, large Friday gatherings including staff and invited visiting khatibs from Kuching and beyond, tarawih prayers throughout Ramadan with guest reciters and iftar gatherings that bring international students and Malaysian peers around shared mats, and Eid prayers that precede family visits in the city. Qur'an classes, tafsir circles and weekly usrah meetings are core to the programme, and women's gatherings occupy the upper gallery. Travellers passing through Kuching en route to Bako National Park, the Sarawak Cultural Village or the Astana palace will discover here an example of university Muslim life set against the lush Bornean landscape. Graduating students frequently return for their nikah ceremonies years later, creating a generational continuity in which weddings, births and even funerals of extended campus families interweave with the academic rhythm that first brought them here as nervous young undergraduates.
