Tentang

Few mosques in the world shimmer quite like Masjid Kristal, known in English as the Crystal Mosque, set on the green waters of the Terengganu River at Kuala Terengganu on Malaysia's eastern coast. Built from steel, glass and mirrored crystal, this remarkable house of prayer seems to float on its island within Taman Tamadun Islam, the Islamic Heritage Park, and it has become one of the most photographed landmarks of the Malay peninsula.

Although Crystal is an English name, the structure belongs fully to the rich Islamic story of Terengganu. This sultanate is considered the cradle of Islam in Malaysia, since the famous Batu Bersurat, the inscribed stone of Terengganu dated to the fourteenth century, records the earliest use of Jawi script to proclaim the faith in Southeast Asia. The mosque was inaugurated by the sultan of Terengganu in 2008, honouring centuries of royal patronage of Qur'anic learning along this coast.

The architecture blends classical Islamic geometry with futuristic engineering. A central dome rises above four graceful minarets, all sheathed in glass panels that mirror the sky by day and glow in shifting colours by night. Walk across the causeway and you pass replicas of great mosques from across the Muslim world, from Makkah and Madinah to Samarkand and Isfahan, each set within the lush heritage park gardens.

Inside, the prayer hall is flooded with daylight through stained glass, and the qibla wall carries calligraphy of divine names rendered in silver. The mosque hosts wifi enabled digital Qur'an stations, a gentle innovation welcomed by young worshippers from nearby Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

The congregation draws from the riverfront neighbourhoods of Kuala Ibai, Chendering and the royal town of Marang, along with tourists from Kuala Lumpur and beyond. During Ramadan, lantern festivals line the banks and the evening azan echoes across the water while families gather for bubur lambuk and keropok lekor before Maghrib. On Eid al Fitr, worshippers arrive in baju melayu in brilliant colours, and children run between prayer mats with sweets and salaams, a scene that captures the warm Terengganu welcome at its most radiant.
