Honouring the noble companion Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, may God be pleased with him, one of the ten companions promised Paradise and commander of Muslim forces at the historic battle of al Qadisiyyah, this Sudanese mosque in the Mrabba' 6 quarter of Al Haj Yusuf within greater Khartoum serves a community settled along the Nile's great convergence. Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, may God be pleased with him, was among the earliest converts to Islam and served as a trusted commander whose leadership during the Muslim conquest of Persia in the seventh century shaped the course of Islamic history. His wisdom, courage, and piety earned him the Prophet's deep affection, and communities across the Muslim world honour his memory by naming mosques in his blessed name. Khartoum stands at the confluence of the White and Blue Niles, a location of deep historical significance for Sudanese civilisation and for the wider Islamic scholarship that flowered along the riverbanks for centuries. Al Haj Yusuf grew rapidly through recent decades as migrants from across Sudan settled in its neighbourhoods seeking work and refuge. Sudanese mosque architecture draws on local traditions of rendered mud brick and more recent concrete construction, producing simple rectangular prayer halls, modest domes, and minarets whose forms echo the architectural heritage of the Nile valley. This mosque offers a dignified face to its neighbourhood, with a paved courtyard welcoming worshippers into a carpeted hall. Five daily prayers gather residents from surrounding streets, and Jumu'ah fills the building with men arriving from the wider quarter. Sermons in Arabic address Qur'anic themes, hadith guidance, and practical matters of family life and honest livelihood. Ramadan brings communal iftar meals of Sudanese dishes including asida, kisra, ful medammes, and sweet basboosa served after Maghrib, followed by taraweeh prayers. Qur'anic memorisation classes meet year round. Women worship in a dedicated section with its own entry. Eid prayers draw the extended community. Nearby landmarks include the confluence of the two Niles, the Mahdi's tomb in Omdurman, the old markets of central Khartoum, and the pyramids of Meroe that mark earlier chapters of Nilotic civilisation. Nile waters still sustain the wider Khartoum area, and the mosque sits within a city whose very geography tells a story of the rivers that have carried both trade and faith across Africa for thousands of years.
