Tentang

Among the rolling pastures and olive terraces of Kasserine governorate in central Tunisia, Masjid al Rahmah in the village of Awlad Salim takes its gentle name from the divine attribute al Rahmah, mercy, which is invoked at the opening of every chapter of the Qur'an except one. Awlad Salim is one of the many small farming settlements that dot the governorate, a region whose livelihoods rest on sheep herding, olive pressing, and cereal farming along the slopes of Jebel Semmama and Jebel Chambi, Tunisia's highest peak. Kasserine itself carries ancient roots as the Roman Cillium, and its modern religious life draws on the Zaytouna tradition of Tunis and on the village scholarship of the Tunisian interior. The masjid al Rahmah follows the rural vernacular of the region, with thick limewashed walls that keep the interior cool through the fierce summer, a single modest dome, a short minaret of local stone, and a shaded courtyard where worshippers greet one another before entering. The interior is plain but dignified, with reed mats and donated carpets covering the floor, a carved wooden minbar, and a mihrab painted in soft ochre bearing verses from Surah al Rahman. Daily prayers gather farmers returning from the fields, schoolteachers, and elders, with the fajr followed by a brief reading of the Qur'an and a lesson in Arabic tafsir. Jumu'ah draws a larger congregation, and the khutbah, delivered in Arabic with touches of Tunisian colloquial, often addresses patience, fair dealing in the weekly market, and the duties of parents towards their children. Ramadan transforms the masjid into a centre of evening life, with taraweeh, iftars of lablabi and brik, and Qur'an completion on the night of power. Eid prayers extend into the lanes, and the sacrificial meat of Eid al Adha is shared with families in need. Visitors from towns or abroad are welcomed gently, and modest clothing plus quiet conduct will be appreciated throughout the building. Village women contribute loaves of tabouna bread baked in clay ovens to the Ramadan iftars, and the masjid maintains a small charitable fund that helps poorer families purchase schoolbooks, shoes, and winter coats for children heading off to the regional primary schools in the governorate capital, where many older boys and girls now study with ambitions of university and professional life.
