Tentang
Overlooking the bazaar of Shahgoli in Karimganj district of the Indian state of Assam, the Shahgoli Bazaar Central Mosque serves Muslim traders, farmers, students, and day labourers whose families have cultivated the rice paddies and tea gardens of the Barak valley for many generations. Karimganj itself lies in the southern tip of Assam, close to the borders of Tripura and Bangladesh, and shares deep cultural and linguistic ties with the broader Bengali Muslim world. Islam came to this valley through the preaching of saints such as Shah Jalal of Sylhet in the fourteenth century, whose missionary companions spread across the region and established communities that remain devoutly Muslim to this day.
Shah Jalal arrived in Sylhet in 1303 with a contingent of travelling scholars, and through patient teaching, healing, and exemplary conduct, he drew thousands of people to Islam. His tomb in Sylhet city remains one of the most visited shrines in South Asia. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, had taught that religion is sincere counsel, and Shah Jalal's method of dawah embodied that teaching. The villagers of Shahgoli, like their cousins across the Barak and Surma valleys, preserve that memory in their mosques, their religious schools, and their daily speech.
Architecturally the central mosque reflects the style typical of Assamese Bengali Muslim villages of the Barak valley region. A rectangular prayer hall with brick walls and a tiled verandah along the front, three small domes above the qiblah wall, and a single minaret rise above the bazaar of Shahgoli. Inside, colourful patterned carpets cover the floor, a wooden minbar stands beside a simple tiled mihrab, and ceiling fans turn briskly through the hot, humid summer season. The Friday khutbah is delivered in Sylheti Bengali with Qur'anic quotations in Arabic, and Ramadan brings long tarawih recitations and collective iftars of pakoras, muri, chickpea curry, and sweet ripe dates. Women pray behind a screened partition with their own quiet entrance and ablution corner. Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha are published on this page for every resident of the Shahgoli bazaar area and every traveller through Karimganj district.
