Tentang

Serving the adjoining hamlets of Uttar Gotargram and Mongolshah in Karimganj district of the Barak Valley in Assam, this Jame Masjid anchors the daily and weekly prayer life of a farming community whose fields stretch along the rivers that flow down from Meghalaya. Karimganj lies in a borderland of Assam where Bengali, Sylheti, and Assamese cultures mingle, and whose Islamic roots trace back to the teachers and traders who carried the faith across the Surma valley centuries ago. Each village here has its own mosque, and this Jame Masjid stands among them as the congregational gathering place for Friday prayer and community life for two closely linked hamlets.

A Jame Masjid in the Bengali speaking regions of northeast India is a congregational mosque where Jumu'ah is held, and carrying this designation places the building at the centre of the community's weekly rhythm. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said that when the adhan for Friday is called, believers should hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off their trade, and the Companions, may God be pleased with them, followed that command with devotion. Every Jame Masjid in Karimganj renews that practice beneath the monsoon clouds of the Barak Valley, century after century.

Architecturally, the mosque follows the plain and durable pattern of rural Assamese and Bengali masjids. Raised concrete foundations resist seasonal flooding, whitewashed walls carry simple calligraphic bands, a modest minaret holds the loudspeaker from which the adhan is called, and a tin or tiled roof shelters a carpeted hall with a plain mihrab oriented toward Mecca. A small madrasa wing teaches the children of the two hamlets to read and recite the Qur'an after Asr every day.

Rice farmers, fishermen, small traders, and schoolteachers gather here for the five daily prayers, and on Fridays the hall fills with men walking in from the surrounding fields. Taraweeh during Ramadan draws even the distant relatives who have moved to the towns. On this page visitors will find the current prayer times, address, and practical notes to help every traveller, pilgrim, or neighbour locate the Uttar Gotargram and Mongolshah Jame Masjid and share quietly in its unhurried, devoted, and genuinely rural life of community worship under the wide skies of the Barak Valley.
