Tentang
Tucked within the village life of Karimganj district in Assam state of northeast India, Agtaluk Uttar Jame Masjid serves a devout Bengali speaking Muslim community whose families have farmed the fertile plains along the Surma Kushiyara river system for generations. Karimganj lies in the Barak valley of southern Assam, a region that was historically part of greater Sylhet before the 1947 partition, and the cultural, linguistic, and religious life of the district reaches across the modern border into Bangladesh. The local population is a mixture of Bengali Muslims, Bengali Hindus, Manipuri, and various tribal communities, and their village jame mosques play a central role in sustaining the rhythms of daily prayer.
Bengali Islamic heritage draws on nearly eight hundred years of continuous Muslim presence in the eastern subcontinent, reaching back to the conquests of Bakhtiyar Khilji in the early thirteenth century and to the gentle teaching of wandering saints and scholars from Arabia, Persia, and Central Asia who crossed the Himalayan passes or the Bay of Bengal to reach the river lands. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, taught that whoever walks a path seeking knowledge, God makes easy for him a path to Paradise, and Assamese Bengali Muslims have held fast to that teaching through their support of village jame mosques, madrasas, and Qur'anic memorisation centres even in remote districts.
Architecturally the masjid follows the Bengali provincial village style. Whitewashed walls frame tall arched entrances, a small square minaret carries the adhan across the surrounding paddies, and a simple dome crowns the main prayer hall. Inside, patterned mats and carpets cover the floor, ceiling fans turn steadily through the humid monsoons, and calligraphic panels along the upper walls carry verses of the Qur'an. Friday sermons are delivered in Bengali, with Arabic citations drawn directly from the Qur'an and prophetic hadith, while during Ramadan the mosque offers collective iftars of chola, piyaju, and sweet rasgulla. Eid mornings fill the courtyard with families in new clothes. Daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha at the Agtaluk mosque appear on this page for every resident and visitor of Karimganj.
