Tentang
Rooted in the tea growing hills and paddy plains of the Karimganj district of Assam in far northeastern India, the Purbo Khasa Husainiya Jame Masjid and the attached Khasa Borodesh Hafizia Madrasa form a combined centre of prayer and Qur'anic memorisation serving a devoted Bengali Muslim community. Karimganj district lies in the Barak Valley along the border with Bangladesh, and the Muslim population of this region traces its heritage to the arrival of devoted preachers and scholars during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when the Bengali sultanates extended their patronage of Islamic learning into the hills and valleys of the eastern reaches.
The combined institution carries in its name several layered meanings. Husainiya refers to a space for commemorative gatherings, especially during the early days of Muharram, and many such husainiyat exist across the Muslim world from South Asia to East Africa. The term Hafizia Madrasa identifies the institution as a school of Qur'an memorisation, producing hafiz, those who memorise the entire Qur'an by heart. Such schools have sustained the transmission of the sacred text across the centuries, in an unbroken chain of teachers and students stretching back through the generations to the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, may God be pleased with them.
The prayer hall is a simple concrete structure with whitewashed walls, a tiled roof, and a modest minaret. Inside, the carpets are muted green, the mihrab is framed by painted calligraphy, and a carved wooden minbar stands beside it. The adjoining madrasa occupies a two storey building with classrooms where children sit on thin mats reciting the Qur'an in patient rhythms from dawn until Dhuhr. Books of tajwid, tafsir, and the sirah of the Prophet fill modest shelves along the walls.
Daily prayers gather neighbours from the surrounding villages, and Jumu'ah fills the hall with farmers, labourers, and the entire student body of the madrasa. Khutbahs are delivered in Bengali with Qur'anic verses quoted in Arabic, drawing on themes of patience, sincerity, and the remembrance of God. Visitors to the Barak Valley exploring the Kushiyara river, the ancient Silchar town, or the surrounding tea estates will find precise daily prayer times for this masjid on this page, alongside directions, address, and a welcoming note for every traveller.
