About

Within the Shah Muhalla neighbourhood of Faqir Colony in Karachi, the Jamia Masjid Khadija offers a house of worship named for the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, the noble Khadija bint Khuwaylid, may God be pleased with her, whose early faith, generosity and unwavering support formed the very foundation of the early Muslim community. Karachi itself grew from a fishing port called Kolachi into the vast metropolis and commercial capital of Sindh, absorbing migrants from Gujarat, Punjab, Balochistan and the muhajir communities from northern India after partition, and its neighbourhoods carry this layered heritage in their mosques, madrasahs and shrines. Faqir Colony is a close knit working class quarter where the daily call to prayer rises above narrow lanes of brick houses and small workshops, and this mosque anchors the spiritual and social life of its residents. The architecture blends practical simplicity with decorative touches common across Pakistani mosques: a whitewashed facade, a green domed prayer hall, a slender minaret broadcasting the adhan and a forecourt shaded by an awning for the summer months. Inside, the mihrab is framed by Qur'anic verses in Naskh calligraphy and the carpeted floor seats several hundred worshippers. Five daily prayers draw labourers, shopkeepers and schoolchildren, while Jumu'ah brings a crowded khutbah in Urdu. Ramadan transforms the mosque with iftar distributions of dates, fruit and biryani funded by local donors, tarawih prayers led by huffaz and the spiritual intensity of the last ten nights. Eid mornings see families walking to the mosque in fresh shalwar kameez to offer the special prayer together. Travellers to Karachi can pair a visit here with exploration of the nearby bazaars, the imposing Mazar e Quaid and the historic Bhimpura quarter. The mosque committee runs a small clinic one afternoon each week, where a volunteer doctor offers free consultations to widows and senior citizens of the Faqir Colony quarter, a service that has become treasured among families struggling with the high cost of urban healthcare. The Qur'an memorisation programme for girls, named after the honoured Khadija, may God be pleased with her, produces a steady stream of young huffazat whose graduation ceremonies draw relatives from across Sindh, Punjab and even Balochistan in a joyful annual gathering of Pakistani Muslim family life.
