Near the narrow lanes of the Sahafi Colony, a quiet residential quarter of Karachi often associated historically with journalists and writers of the city, the Jamia Masjid Rabia welcomes neighbours for the five daily prayers. The colony took its name from the Arabic and Urdu word for journalist, sahafi, and grew during the mid twentieth century as a planned residential area where writers, editors, and printing house workers settled with their families. Over the decades the neighbourhood has retained a literary and reflective character, and its mosques sit comfortably among bookshops, small printing works, and neighbourhood tea stalls.
The name Rabia, in its feminine Arabic form, echoes the name of several honoured early Muslim women, most famously Rabia al Adawiyya al Basriyyah, the eighth century worshipper of Basra whose deep love of God became legendary across the Muslim world. Her sayings on sincere devotion and selfless love, preserved in numerous biographical collections, are often quoted by preachers from Morocco to Indonesia. Naming a masjid in her honour is a gentle way of acknowledging that the spiritual life of the Muslim community has always been sustained by women saints, scholars, and mothers as well as by men.
The prayer hall itself follows the vernacular of old Karachi, with whitewashed plastered walls, a single modest minaret, a small dome above the mihrab, and carved wooden doors opening onto the lane. Inside, long woven prayer rugs run in parallel lines across a tiled floor, the mihrab is framed by calligraphic panels drawn from Surat al Fatiha, and a plain wooden minbar stands beside it. A small library at the rear holds the Qur'an, tafsir in Urdu, and short biographies of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and of his noble companions, may God be pleased with them.
Friday congregations gather residents of the colony, journalists on assignment in the city, and neighbourhood shopkeepers. Khutbahs are delivered in Urdu, often drawing on themes of honesty in the written word, the ethics of public speech, and the dignity of modest labour. Travellers to Karachi visiting the National Museum, the old Mohatta Palace, or the curve of Clifton beach will find here a quiet masjid with accurate daily prayer times listed on this page and a welcoming congregation at every hour.
