Tentang
Rooted in the bustling commercial corridor of Chandni Chowk in the Paposh Nagar neighbourhood of Karachi, Jamia Masjid e Muhammadi takes its name from the blessed Muhammadan connection that every mosque signals by invoking the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. The word jamia designates a Friday congregational mosque capable of hosting the jumuah prayer, while chandni chowk literally means the moonlit square, a name given to busy commercial intersections across South Asia and reminiscent of Old Delhi's famous Chandni Chowk. Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and principal port, traces its Muslim heritage to the arrival of traders and ulema during the time of the Kalhora and Talpur dynasties of Sindh, later reinforced by the great migration of 1947 when millions of refugees arrived from north India and brought with them the religious scholarship of Lucknow, Delhi and the Punjab. Sindh's own Islamic memory reaches back to Muhammad bin Qasim's campaigns in the early eighth century, making it among the earliest territories to receive the faith outside Arabia. Notable scholars associated with Karachi include Mufti Muhammad and the founders of the numerous darul ulooms that now dot the metropolis. The regional architectural tradition combines Mughal memory with early twentieth century civic styles, producing mosques of plastered brick with onion domes, corner minarets topped by chhatris, carved marble mihrabs and expansive courtyards. This mosque hosts five daily prayers drawing shopkeepers, office workers and students, a very large Friday gathering whose khutbah is delivered in Urdu with generous Arabic citations, tarawih through Ramadan filling every rug and corner, and Eid prayers spilling into the surrounding lanes. Qur'an memorisation and tafsir lessons meet through the week. those stopping at the Quaid's mausoleum, Empress Market, or the old Karachi trams on display nearby will find this mosque a lively illustration of the city's devotional energy and hospitality. During Muharram the mosque plays a key role in civic peace initiatives, its imam coordinating with neighbourhood elders to ensure that mutual respect is maintained during commemorations and that the surrounding bazaars continue their commercial life without needless disruption or anxiety.
