Tentang

Inside one of the older quarters of Karachi, Sindh's provincial capital on the Arabian Sea, the Jama Masjid Usmania gathers a quiet neighbourhood congregation beneath its tiled roof and carved wooden doors. Karachi itself grew rapidly during the twentieth century from a small fishing town to a metropolis of more than twenty million people, and the inner neighbourhoods preserve narrow alleys and domestic courtyards that frame a daily life in which the masjid has always played a central role. This congregational hall belongs to that layered urban fabric in which small mosques, endowed by pious individuals or local associations, form the backbone of neighbourhood devotion.

The name Usmania honours the memory of Uthman ibn Affan, may God be pleased with him, the third of the rightly guided successors of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Uthman was known as Dhu al Nurain, possessor of two lights, because he married in succession two daughters of the Prophet. He is remembered for his gentleness, his legendary generosity, especially in financing the Muslim army during the Expedition of Tabuk and in purchasing the well of Ruma to supply water freely to the community, and for his effort in collecting and standardising the written text of the Qur'an during his caliphate.

The prayer hall carries the vernacular of old Karachi, with whitewashed plastered walls, a modest dome above the mihrab, a single slender minaret, and carved wooden shutters on windows that open onto the lane outside. Ceiling fans turn slowly above long woven prayer rugs, and the mihrab is framed by calligraphic panels bearing the shahada. A shelf near the entrance holds copies of the Qur'an, short biographies of Uthman and the other rightly guided successors, and pamphlets of supplications for pilgrims and travellers.

Friday congregations fill the hall with shopkeepers, tailors, students from the nearby colleges, and elders who have prayed here since the years following partition. Khutbahs are delivered in Urdu and Sindhi, often speaking of the generosity and calmness of Uthman and of the other companions, may God be pleased with them. Travellers drawn to Karachi by the Mazar e Quaid, the old Saddar quarter, or the Mohatta Palace will find here precise daily prayer times for every salah listed on this page, along with warm neighbourly hospitality.
