Tentang

Set amid the leafy avenues of Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang, Selangor, the campus mosque is a busy spiritual home for students, lecturers and staff drawn from every Malaysian state and dozens of countries beyond. The university, known affectionately as UPM, grew from an agricultural college founded in 1931 into one of the nation's leading research institutions in food science, forestry and veterinary medicine, and its mosque has expanded in step with the campus, today welcoming thousands of worshippers for the five daily prayers, Friday congregations and special programmes through the entire academic year.

Built in a contemporary Malaysian idiom, the mosque uses wide overhanging eaves, latticed timber screens and a tall central dome tiled in pale green to keep the interior cool under the tropical sun. Louvred clerestory windows draw in breezes scented with frangipani from the surrounding gardens, while ceiling fans turn slowly above neatly rolled prayer mats. Separate ablution pavilions at either end, a dedicated women's hall upstairs and generous shoe racks near the entrance reflect the careful thought given to a congregation of thousands every Friday.

Beyond prayer, the mosque hosts a lively programme of tarbiyah and dakwah activities throughout the week. Weekly Quran tajweed classes, tafsir halaqat in Malay and English, and lectures by visiting scholars from Al Azhar and the International Islamic University of Malaysia fill the side rooms on evenings and weekends. Student societies meet in the mezzanine to organise iftar suppers during Ramadan, charitable drives for flood affected villages in Kelantan and Pahang, and marriage preparation seminars for graduating seniors entering the workforce. Arabic language circles gather on Saturday mornings, while a modest reading room beside the foyer keeps books in four languages for any registered student to borrow freely.

The mosque also functions as a counselling refuge for young people far from home. Trained imams and ustazahs offer confidential guidance to students facing academic stress, homesickness or questions of faith, and a well publicised notice board lists helplines and zakat distribution points for those in genuine financial need. Visitors to UPM are encouraged to attend any public lecture or Friday sermon, to share in tea and kuih afterwards, and to experience the warm Malaysian hospitality that flows as freely inside the prayer hall as along the paddy fields nearby.
