Tucked into the quiet Jordanian village of Judita in the governorate of Irbid, Masjid Abu Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him) takes its name from one of the most prolific narrators of prophetic hadith in Islamic history. Irbid itself is an ancient city, known as Arbila to the Greeks and counted among the cities of the Decapolis in Roman times, with archaeological layers stretching back to the Bronze Age. During the early Muslim conquests in the seventh century, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, crossed these hills, and local traditions preserve the names of several who settled in the region. Judita is one of many small agricultural villages whose olive groves, wheat fields, and family owned orchards define the rolling countryside of northern Jordan.
Abu Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him), whose given name was Abd al Rahman ibn Sakhr al Dawsi, accepted Islam in the seventh year after the Prophet's migration, in the year of Khaybar, and from that moment until the Prophet's death he rarely left his side, clinging to his teacher so that he might memorise every hadith. When other companions were earning their living by farming or trading, he would remain in the courtyard of the mosque, and so God placed in his heart an extraordinary memory. He is credited with narrating thousands of hadith that remain the inheritance of every Muslim today. To name a mosque after him is to tell every worshipper to cherish the sunnah.
The building itself is in the classic Jordanian village style. A small square minaret with a green cap rises above the prayer hall, limestone walls absorb the summer heat, and a modest courtyard planted with lemon and pomegranate trees welcomes worshippers. Inside, red patterned carpets cover the floor, a simple mihrab points toward Makkah, and a wooden minbar stands ready for Friday preaching. Accurate daily prayer times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha appear on this page, serving every resident of Judita, every Jordanian passing through Irbid, and every traveller who loves the villages of the beautiful Jordanian north.
