Tentang

Surau Taman Sri Tebrau serves the Taman Sri Tebrau residential area of Johor Bahru, Malaysia — a suburb whose name honours the Tebrau River that runs nearby. The surau is a neighbourhood-scale prayer space, following the standard Malaysian pattern of providing daily salah, weekend religious education, and seasonal programming to the immediate community without the larger institutional structure of a jamek mosque. The building is likely a simple one-story structure, with a prayer hall large enough for the daily jamaah, a separate women's section, wudu facilities, a verandah for shoes and conversation, and a small community room for classes and gatherings. Taman Sri Tebrau is home to a mix of professionals, families, and retirees drawn to its residential character and its proximity to Johor Bahru's central amenities, and the surau reflects the character of its residents — middle-class, education-conscious, actively engaged in community life. Daily prayers are held on schedule, with small but regular congregations forming for each of the five salawat. The Friday jumu'ah sends worshippers to the nearby jamek mosque. Weekend religious education for children runs in the afternoons, and the women's programming includes weekly halaqat and monthly gatherings. During Ramadan, the surau becomes especially busy, with taraweeh every night drawing large attendance, iftar organised by neighbourhood family rotations, and a programme of tausiyah and tafsir sessions. The last ten nights see the particular intensification of Muslim spiritual life in Malaysia, with qiyam prayers, increased recitation of the Qur'an, and the watchful seeking of Laylat al-Qadr. Eid prayers draw families from across the taman, filling the surau and its outdoor spaces. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that cleanliness is half of faith, and the women of the surau committee take this teaching seriously in the consistent maintenance of the prayer space — washed carpets, tidy wudu areas, fresh linens in the women's section, everything prepared for the next worshipper who steps through the door for the next prayer. The surau's committee meets quarterly in the small back room, with minutes kept by the same retired civil servant for the last fifteen years whose handwriting is so careful that the older records could pass for calligraphy.
