Tentang

Surau Nurul Hidayah in Johor Bahru combines two Arabic terms — Nurul Hidayah — meaning "the light of guidance," expressing the hope that those who worship within these walls will receive from Allah the divine light that guides the heart toward Him. The name is common across Malaysian suraus, and its frequency reflects the centrality of the concept of hidayah in Malaysian Muslim religious imagination. The surau is a neighbourhood-scale prayer space, typical of the thousands of such buildings that dot residential areas across Malaysia. The building is modest: a prayer hall, a women's section, wudu facilities, a small verandah, and whatever storage the committee has arranged for prayer mats, mushafs, and children's class materials. The kariah is the immediate neighbourhood — families living within walking distance, who drop into the surau for the daily prayers in the rhythm of their working lives. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the kariah: retirees making every prayer; office workers stopping in between commitments; students from the surrounding schools and colleges; and families converging for Maghrib and Isha after their evening routines. The Friday jumu'ah is held at one of the larger nearby mosques. Weekend Qur'an classes for children run in the afternoons, taught by volunteer ustadh and ustazah from within the community. Women's programming includes weekly halaqat, monthly tahlil gatherings, and seasonal events around Ramadan and the Eids. Ramadan transforms the surau into the centre of neighbourhood spiritual life, with taraweeh every night, iftar on a family rota, tausiyah between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular intensification of the last ten nights with qiyam prayers and Qur'an recitation gatherings. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that no gathering sits to remember Allah without angels surrounding them, mercy descending on them, tranquility covering them, and Allah mentioning them among those with Him. The gatherings at Surau Nurul Hidayah — for salah, for tahlil, for Qur'an classes — quietly lay claim to that beautiful promise. On the surau's small noticeboard the latest memorised sura of each mengaji student is written in careful marker, and parents often linger longer than necessary reading down the list for their own child's name with unconcealed pride.
