Tentang

Surau Khadijah Bahriyah occupies a quiet corner of Johor Bahru, its name honouring the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam, Khadijah bint Khuwaylid radiallahu anha, the noble Makkan merchant woman who was the first to believe in his message and who supported him with unwavering love and wealth during the earliest and most difficult years of revelation. To name a house of prayer after her is to invoke her example of steadfast faith, generosity, and devotion, and the congregation here often reflects on those qualities in their own lives. Johor Bahru, the administrative and commercial heart of Johor state, is a city shaped by its proximity to Singapore, its multicultural street food, and its deep roots in the traditional Johor sultanate, and every neighbourhood in the city has a cluster of small suraus like this one serving the religious needs of residents. The building itself is modest but well maintained, with a clean prayer hall, a functional mihrab, a small sound system for the adhan and khutbah, and a separate curtained section for women so that sisters may pray in comfort. Ablution facilities are kept scrupulously clean, and the surau committee organises regular maintenance to ensure the space remains dignified. Beyond the five daily prayers, Surau Khadijah Bahriyah hosts weekly lectures on fiqh and akhlaq, Qur'an tajwid classes for children and adults, and occasional community meals on Fridays. The jamaah is tight knit, drawn from the surrounding kampung and nearby housing blocks, and many families have worshipped here across two or three generations. During the blessed nights of Ramadan the surau glows with activity, the hall filled with worshippers for tarawih, the kitchen area bustling with volunteers preparing iftar, and the atmosphere heavy with barakah and gratitude that once again the holy month has returned to the faithful. Elderly members of the congregation often speak with pride of how the surau has weathered the many transformations of Johor Bahru across their lifetimes, seeing the city grow from a modest colonial port into the sprawling metropolis it has become, while the rhythm of five daily prayers within its quiet hall has remained unchanged since their childhood, a quiet constancy that offers its own spiritual lesson to the children who now come to learn Qur'an within the same walls where their grandparents once knelt.
