Tentang

Surau Kampung Ubi Baru serves the Kampung Ubi Baru community in Johor Bahru, Malaysia — a kampung whose name translates as "new tuber village," a reminder of the agricultural roots that preceded the current urban character of the area. Many Malaysian kampungs carry names reflecting their founding activities — a tree, a crop, a landmark — and these names persist long after the original features have been paved over or built upon, preserving a thread of historical continuity in the urban landscape. The surau is a neighbourhood prayer space serving this kariah, modest in scale but central in its role for the daily religious life of the community. The building is likely a simple one-story structure with a prayer hall for the regular jamaah, a separate women's section, wudu facilities at the side, and a covered verandah where neighbours gather for conversation before and after prayers. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the kariah — retirees who have made every prayer for decades, working adults who attend when their schedules allow, students and children passing through in the natural rhythm of their days. The Friday jumu'ah sends the worshippers to a nearby jamek mosque, and the surau handles the daily work of the five salawat and the seasonal intensifications. Weekend Qur'an classes for children are offered, with volunteer teachers drawn from within the community. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil and yasin gatherings mark the rhythm of the neighbourhood's spiritual life. Ramadan transforms the surau into a centre of nightly community activity, with taraweeh prayers, communal iftar organised on a family rota, and the particular intensification of the last ten nights. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that the best charity is one given with a heart sincere toward Allah, and the small acts of generosity that characterise kampung surau life — bringing food for iftar, teaching children's classes without pay, maintaining the building through volunteer labour — are the quiet soil from which that sincerity grows in the life of the Kampung Ubi Baru community.
