Surau Ijtihad Mariam

Surau Ijtihad Mariam is a small surau in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, bearing a thoughtful name that combines Ijtihad — the scholarly effort of independent reasoning in Islamic law — with Mariam, the Arabic form of Mary, mother of Prophet Isa, peace be upon him, one of the most revered women in Islam and the only one named directly by her own name in the Qur'an. The combination suggests both scholarly aspiration and reverence for one of Islam's exemplary female figures. As a surau rather than a full masjid, the building is modest in size, serving the immediate neighbourhood with daily prayers rather than the Friday jumu'ah, which draws the community to the larger mosques nearby. Inside, the hall is small but clean, with carpet laid in saf lines, a simple mihrab, a small women's section, and wudu facilities at the side. The kariah is made up mostly of working families and retirees from the surrounding Johor Bahru neighbourhood, and the surau is staffed by rotating volunteers who lead the prayers. Weekend Qur'an lessons for children are offered, taught by a ustazah who lives in the community and knows every family by name. The women's programming here is notably active, befitting the name Mariam, with weekly halaqat, monthly tahlil gatherings, and occasional tausiyah by visiting female scholars. During Ramadan, the small hall is filled to capacity each night for taraweeh, with overflow worshippers praying on the porch and in the adjacent courtyard. The neighbourhood organises iftar on a rota basis, with families taking turns to provide the meal for whoever turns up at the surau before Maghrib. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that the example of a good companion is like the seller of musk, and the regular attendees of Surau Ijtihad Mariam share that subtle fragrance with one another through their consistent attendance, their care for newcomers, and their collective commitment to keeping this small house of prayer alive and vital in the life of their corner of Johor Bahru. The ustazah who leads the women's halaqa is a local retired schoolteacher whose patience with beginners is legendary throughout the kariah, and several of her students are now themselves teaching their own daughters the same opening suras she taught them.
