Surau Hidayah in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, takes its name from the Arabic word for divine guidance — hidayah — the gift of spiritual orientation that Muslims believe only Allah can grant. The surau is a neighbourhood prayer space in the Johor Bahru urban fabric, serving its immediate community with daily salah and the regular rhythm of small-scale religious programming. As a surau rather than a jamek mosque, it does not host Friday jumu'ah — that duty is discharged at one of the larger mosques nearby — but it carries on the daily work of being the place where the adhan is called, where ablution is performed, where the carpet waits for the quiet footfall of worshippers through the five prayers of every day. The building is typical of neighbourhood suraus: a single prayer hall, a small women's section often screened by a curtain or low wall, wudu facilities at the side or back, a covered verandah for shoes and conversation, and perhaps a modest library of mushafs and Islamic books for those who wish to read between prayers. The kariah is made up of the families living within walking distance, including office workers, retirees, small business owners, and their children. Weekend Qur'an classes for children are held in the afternoons, taught by volunteer teachers from the community. The women's section hosts a weekly halaqa, and monthly tahlil and yasin gatherings mark the spiritual rhythm of the neighbourhood. During Ramadan, the surau comes alive with taraweeh every night, communal iftar organised on a family rota, and the increased religious activity of the blessed month. Eid prayers draw families in their new clothes, with takbir ringing from the surau's loudspeaker from dawn. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that the hidayah of even one soul is better than the best of this world, and the quiet, consistent offering of a place to pray through all the mundane hours of regular life is one of the ways this surau contributes to that sacred task of guidance. A small notebook kept by the surau secretary lists the birthdays of every child in the community, and on each one a brief supplication is offered after Maghrib, a quiet custom the children themselves only learn about once they are old enough to ask.
