Tentang

Surau Darussalam in Johor Bahru shares its name with the Qur'anic designation of Paradise itself — Darus Salam, "the abode of peace" — one of the most evocative names used in the Qur'an for the ultimate home of the believers in the hereafter. To name a surau Darussalam is to set a high standard for the atmosphere and purpose of the space, expressing the hope that worshippers will find within its walls a taste of the tranquility that awaits them in the gardens of eternity. The surau is one of many Malaysian neighbourhood prayer spaces bearing this common and beloved name, each serving its own kariah. This particular Surau Darussalam in Johor Bahru serves its immediate community with daily prayers, weekend religious education, women's programming, and seasonal religious activity. The building is modest — a prayer hall, a women's section, wudu facilities, and typically a verandah or porch — maintained through the volunteer efforts of the kariah. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the neighbourhood to the surau, following the pattern of attendance that characterises Malaysian suraus: dedicated early risers for Fajr, office workers during the day, families converging for Maghrib and Isha in the evenings. The Friday jumu'ah is held at a nearby jamek mosque. Weekend Qur'an classes run for the children of the kariah, taught by volunteers from within the community. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil gatherings mark the passing of community members and the remembrance of ancestors. During Ramadan, the surau is the heart of nightly community life, with taraweeh filling the hall, iftar organised by family rotations, tausiyah between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular spiritual focus of the final ten nights with their qiyam prayers and Laylat al-Qadr observances. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that Paradise has a fragrance that can be smelled from the distance of seventy years' travel, and the worshippers of Surau Darussalam hope that their modest earthly prayer hall contains something of that distant heavenly scent. The plaque above the door of Surau Darussalam, now slightly weathered, carries the date of the building's completion and the names of the founding committee, and local children still pause occasionally to trace the letters of grandfathers they never met.
