Tentang

Surau Darul Abad in Johor Bahru takes its name from the Arabic Darul Abad — sometimes translated as "the abode of eternity" or "the eternal dwelling," a reference to the eternal life of the hereafter that Islam teaches is the true home of the believer, with this worldly life being merely a passing stop on the journey. The name invites the worshippers in this house of prayer to hold in mind the ultimate reality of the afterlife, framing their daily worship as preparation for the eternity to come. The surau is a modest neighbourhood prayer space in the Johor Bahru urban area, serving its immediate kariah with the daily cycle of prayers, weekend religious education, and seasonal programming. The building is typical of suraus — a single-story structure with a prayer hall, a women's section, wudu facilities, and enough grounds for a small courtyard where community gatherings can happen. Daily prayers are held throughout the week, with the regular jamaah turning up in the loose pattern that has characterised Malaysian Muslim neighbourhood life for generations: a handful of dedicated regulars for Fajr, larger gatherings for Maghrib and Isha, and quieter mid-day attendance for Zuhur and Asar. Friday jumu'ah sends the worshippers to one of the larger jamek mosques nearby. Weekend Qur'an classes for children, a women's weekly halaqa, and monthly tahlil gatherings round out the regular programming. Ramadan brings the full intensification: taraweeh every night, iftar organised by family rotations, tausiyah sessions between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular attentiveness of the last ten nights. Eid prayers draw the families of the surrounding area, and the takbir rings from the loudspeaker from dawn. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that every son of Adam is a traveller, and the world is like shade under a tree that the traveller rests under briefly before moving on. Surau Darul Abad, with its name pointing toward the eternal destination, quietly keeps that teaching alive in the hearts of those who come to pray within its walls. On the final Friday of each Ramadan, the surau hosts a special gathering where the older members recite du'as for the departed relatives of the kariah, and the list of names quietly grows longer with each passing year.
