Surau Bakar Batu, Al-mubarak serves the Bakar Batu area of Johor Bahru, Malaysia, with the additional designation Al-mubarak — "the blessed" — underscoring the surau's aspiration to be a place of divine blessing. The Bakar Batu area is a neighbourhood of Johor Bahru with its own particular character, and the surau anchors the daily religious life of its immediate community. As a surau rather than a jamek mosque, it does not host the Friday jumu'ah, which is held at one of the larger mosques nearby, but it carries on the daily work of the five salawat and the seasonal intensifications of Islamic life. The building is modest, typical of residential suraus — a prayer hall with carpet in saf lines, a simple mihrab, a small women's section, wudu facilities at the side, and a covered verandah. The kariah is drawn from the families living within walking distance, who depend on the surau as their daily anchor for prayer. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the community, with the familiar pattern of attendance across the five salawat. Weekend Qur'an classes for children run in the afternoons, taught by volunteer ustadh and ustazah from within the community, guiding students through the qaidah, short suras, and the beginnings of full Qur'an recitation. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil and yasin gatherings mark the community's spiritual rhythm. During Ramadan, the surau is the centre of nightly community activity, with taraweeh filling the hall, iftar organised on a family rota, tausiyah sessions between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular spiritual focus of the last ten nights. Eid prayers draw the families of the kariah in new clothes, with takbir ringing from the loudspeaker from dawn. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that Allah descends barakah on any gathering where His name is remembered, and the gatherings at Surau Bakar Batu Al-mubarak — for salah, for halaqat, for Ramadan iftar, for tahlil — quietly receive that barakah, making the surau's name a lived reality in the faithful rhythm of community life.
