Surau As-Syakirin

Surau As-Syakirin in Johor Bahru takes its name from a beautiful Qur'anic description — ash-shakirin, "the grateful ones" — the people praised in the Qur'an for recognising the blessings of Allah and responding with thankfulness. The name invites the worshippers in this house of prayer to cultivate the quality of shukr, to become people whose prayers and daily acts are marked by gratitude toward the One who has given them every breath. The surau is a neighbourhood-scale establishment in Johor Bahru, serving its immediate community with the full range of daily and seasonal religious services. As a surau rather than a jamek, it does not host the Friday jumu'ah, which is held at one of the larger mosques in the area, but it carries on the daily work of prayer and religious education throughout the year. The building is modest, typical of suraus: a single prayer hall with carpet laid in saf lines, a wooden or simple concrete mihrab, a small minbar, a separate women's section, and wudu facilities at the side. The kariah is made up of the families living in the surrounding streets, who drop in for prayers throughout the day and bring their children for weekend Qur'an classes. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil and yasin gatherings mark the spiritual rhythm of the neighbourhood. Ramadan brings the full intensification of community life: taraweeh every night, iftar organised on a family rota, bubur lambuk and sweet drinks laid out before Maghrib, and the special programmes of the last ten nights. Eid prayers fill the hall and spill onto the courtyard, and the Eid-day takbir rings from the loudspeaker from dawn. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم reminded the believers that Allah loves those who are grateful, and the worshippers who come to Surau As-Syakirin five times a day, week after week, year after year, quietly cultivate the quality of shukr that the surau's name invites — gratitude for health, for family, for the gift of Islam, for every prayer that Allah has enabled them to offer.
