Tentang

Surau Ar-Rayyan in Johor Bahru takes its name from Ar-Rayyan — the special gate of Paradise reserved, according to the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, for those who fast for the sake of Allah. To name a surau Ar-Rayyan is to invoke the rewards promised to the fasting believers and to remind worshippers of the special station of saum in Islamic worship. The name carries particular resonance during Ramadan, when the surau's worshippers connect daily with the month-long act of devotion that earns entry through that very gate. The surau itself is a neighbourhood prayer space in Johor Bahru, typical of Malaysian residential suraus, serving its immediate kariah with daily prayers, weekend religious education, and seasonal programming. The building is modest: a prayer hall with carpet in saf lines, a simple mihrab, a small women's section, wudu facilities, and a verandah where the community gathers. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the neighbourhood to the five salawat, and the Friday jumu'ah is held at a nearby jamek mosque. Weekend Qur'an classes for children run in the afternoons, and the women's halaqa meets weekly for Qur'an recitation practice and religious study. Ramadan is, naturally, the surau's most significant season given its name. The month of fasting, which earns those who observe it entrance through the gate of Ar-Rayyan, is observed with particular fullness: taraweeh prayers every night, iftar organised on a family rota, bubur lambuk and dates before Maghrib, tausiyah sessions between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular intensification of the last ten nights with qiyam prayers and the watchful seeking of Laylat al-Qadr. Eid prayers draw the community's families, celebrating the successful completion of the fast. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that the fasting person has two joys — the joy of breaking the fast at Maghrib, and the joy of meeting his Lord. The worshippers of Surau Ar-Rayyan experience the first of those joys together every evening during Ramadan, and they hope that their faithful fasting will earn them the second joy in due time.
