Tentang

Surau Al-Rahmah in Johor Bahru carries one of the most beautiful names in Islamic spirituality — Ar-Rahmah, the divine mercy, the quality of Allah that encompasses all things, as the Qur'an proclaims. To call a surau Al-Rahmah is to place it under the most fundamental attribute of Allah, to invite mercy into every prayer offered within its walls, and to remind worshippers that the source of all religious life is the boundless compassion of their Lord. The surau is a neighbourhood prayer space in Johor Bahru, typical of the thousands of such buildings across Malaysia, serving its kariah with daily salah and the seasonal rhythms of Islamic life. The building is modest but well-kept: a prayer hall with carpet and mihrab, a women's section, wudu facilities, and a verandah for shoes and conversation before and after prayers. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the neighbourhood — a handful for Fajr, larger crowds for Maghrib and Isha, quieter attendance for the midday prayers. The Friday jumu'ah sends worshippers to a nearby jamek mosque, and the surau carries on the daily work of the five salawat and the weekly rhythms of weekend classes and halaqat. Weekend Qur'an classes for children bring perhaps thirty or forty students to the surau on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil gatherings honour community members who have passed. During Ramadan, the surau is the focal point of nightly community activity, with taraweeh filling the hall, iftar organised by family rotations, and the particular spiritual focus of the final ten nights. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that Allah has one hundred parts of mercy, of which He has sent down one to the earth — and it is by that one part that all creatures show compassion to one another. The worshippers of Surau Al-Rahmah tap into that single distributed portion of divine mercy every day as they gather to pray, to teach their children, to share food during Ramadan, and to support one another through the ordinary and extraordinary events of community life.
