Surau Al-Hasan in Johor Bahru bears the name of Al-Hasan — one of the beautiful Islamic names meaning "the beautiful" or "the good," carried by Prophet Muhammad's صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم beloved grandson Al-Hasan ibn Ali, peace be upon him, who holds a place of profound honour in Islamic tradition as one of the leaders of the youth of Paradise. The name invites the worshippers to reflect on the legacy of the Prophet's family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and to aspire to the ihsan — the excellence of worship — that the name implies. The surau is a neighbourhood prayer space in Johor Bahru, serving its immediate kariah with the familiar range of Malaysian surau services: daily prayers, weekend religious education for children, women's halaqat, monthly community gatherings, and seasonal intensification around Ramadan and the Eids. The building is modest, typical of its kind — a prayer hall, a women's section, wudu facilities, a small verandah — and carefully maintained through the volunteer efforts of the kariah. Daily prayers bring the regulars of the neighbourhood, and the Friday jumu'ah is held at a nearby jamek mosque. Weekend Qur'an classes for children run in the afternoons, taught by volunteer ustadh and ustazah from within the community. The women's halaqa meets weekly, and monthly tahlil gatherings mark the passing of community members. Ramadan brings the full intensification, with taraweeh every night, iftar organised on a family rota, tausiyah sessions between Maghrib and Isha, and the particular spiritual focus of the last ten nights. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn are the two leaders of the youth of Paradise, and a surau bearing the name of Al-Hasan carries something of that honour into the everyday life of the Johor Bahru community it serves. Worshippers who come here five times a day quietly connect themselves, through the name over the door, to the lineage of the Prophet's family and the tradition of Islamic excellence that lineage represents. Every year on the tenth of Muharram the kariah gathers for a simple meal of asyura in remembrance of the saving of Prophet Musa from Pharaoh, and the tradition of cooking it together in the surau's small kitchen has continued unbroken since the building opened.
