Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque — the Masjid Negeri Sultan Abu Bakar — is the royal state mosque of Johor, standing proudly in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Built in the late nineteenth century and completed in 1900, it is one of the most beautiful mosques in Malaysia, combining Victorian, Moorish, and Malay architectural elements in a distinctive synthesis. The mosque is named for Sultan Abu Bakar, the late-nineteenth-century Sultan of Johor who commissioned its construction and is remembered as the father of modern Johor. Its silhouette, with a large central dome, slender minarets, and the particular character of its stonework and windows, has become a symbol of Johor Bahru itself. For the Muslim community of Johor Bahru and the wider state, this is not simply a mosque but a place of cultural and historical significance, hosting the state-level religious celebrations, royal events, and the great congregations of Eid and Jumu'ah. Daily prayers are held on schedule, with large gatherings particularly on Fridays. The mosque is also a heritage destination drawing visitors from across Malaysia and internationally, and the staff accommodate respectful non-Muslim visitors who wish to see the architecture and learn about Johor's religious heritage. The imam delivers khutbahs that often reflect on the long partnership between the Johor sultanate and the Islamic faith, and the mosque hosts the major state-level religious programming throughout the year. During Ramadan, the mosque is especially busy, with taraweeh prayers drawing huge congregations, iftar meals distributed on a grand scale, and commemorative events marking Nuzul al-Qur'an and Laylat al-Qadr. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم described the mosque as the most beloved place to Allah, and the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, with its combination of royal patronage, architectural beauty, and active religious life, carries that beloved character on a grand scale. It is both a working mosque and a monument, and the city of Johor Bahru holds it as one of its great treasures. Visitors pause on the front steps for photographs, but the faithful step straight past the photographers and into the hall, reminded that for all the heritage value of the stonework, the truest significance of the building lies in the act of salah itself.
