Tentang

Masjid Kampung Mahmoodiah in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, takes its name from the surrounding kampung, a traditional Malay village neighbourhood now absorbed into the urban fabric of the southern Malaysian city. Though much of Johor Bahru has modernised rapidly in recent decades, the kampungs that preceded the city's growth retain a sense of identity and community, and the mosque that serves Kampung Mahmoodiah is one of the anchors of that continuity. The jamaah is predominantly Malay, made up of families that have lived in the area for generations, alongside newer residents who have moved in as the city has expanded. The mosque follows the standard Malaysian Islamic institutional pattern: five daily prayers held on schedule, Friday jumu'ah as the major weekly congregation, Qur'an classes for children in the afternoons after school, tajweed and memorisation programmes for older students, and a calendar of special events during Ramadan, the two Eids, and the various occasions of Islamic significance. The imam is a respected local figure, typically trained at one of Malaysia's religious teaching institutions, and is present in the community not only as a prayer leader but as a counsellor in family matters, a presider over nikah and janazah, and a resource for religious guidance. The mosque committee, drawn from senior men of the kariah, handles the practical affairs of the building and organises the community's charitable work. During Ramadan, the neighbourhood organises a rota for providing iftar to the mosque, with bubur lambuk, fried chicken, rice, and sweet drinks laid out on long tables each evening. Taraweeh prayers are held every night, and the last ten nights see particular activity, with qiyam prayers, Qur'an recitation gatherings, and the increased charity-giving that marks the most blessed portion of the blessed month. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم taught that whoever goes to the mosque for good is like one who goes to perform Hajj in its reward, and the men and women of Kampung Mahmoodiah quietly accumulate that reward across their lives of regular attendance. Long-time residents of the kampung say that the mosque's second bilal, an old uncle who is now partly blind, can still tell every congregant apart by the sound of their footsteps on the tile, a detail the children find endlessly amazing.
