Tentang

Masjid Jamek As-Syakirin in Johor Bahru bears a name drawn from the Qur'anic ash-shakirin — "the grateful ones" — the category of believers praised in the Qur'an for recognising Allah's blessings and responding with thankfulness. Shukr, or gratitude, is one of the most emphasised virtues in Islamic spiritual teaching, and the Qur'an repeatedly exhorts believers to be grateful, promising increase to those who are and warning of severe punishment to those who deny. A mosque named As-Syakirin is rooted in this emphasis on gratitude. As a jamek, the mosque is authorised to host the Friday congregational prayer, and serves its kariah with the full range of Malaysian mosque services. The building reflects the Malaysian mosque aesthetic, with a central dome, a minaret, a wide courtyard, a well-appointed prayer hall, and a separate women's section with its own facilities. The imam leads the daily prayers, delivers Friday khutbahs that often touch on themes of gratitude, blessing, and the proper response of the believer to divine favour, and officiates at the life events of the community. The mosque committee handles the practical affairs and the community's religious and charitable activities. Children attend kelas mengaji in the afternoons, learning Arabic, Qur'an recitation, and Islamic basics. Women's programming includes weekly halaqat, monthly tahlil gatherings, and substantial involvement in Ramadan iftar preparation. During Ramadan, the mosque is vibrant with taraweeh every night, communal iftar, a programme of tausiyah and tafsir sessions, and the particular spiritual focus of the last ten nights. The Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم was described in hadith as thanking Allah in prostration so deeply that his feet became swollen, and when asked why he worked so hard in worship, he said: "Shall I not be a grateful servant?" The regular worshippers of Masjid Jamek As-Syakirin quietly seek to embody that same spirit of grateful devotion, recognising their five daily prayers as both duty and privilege, the breath-by-breath expression of their thankfulness to the Lord of all worlds. Each Thursday evening the surau hosts a small Yasin recitation for the departed members of the kariah, and the slow careful reading is led by a rotating pair of elders who consider the task a privilege they do not willingly surrender.
