Habib Hassan al Attas Mosque in Johor Bahru commemorates a figure from the illustrious Alawi Ba Alawi Sadah, the family of sayyids descended from the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa alihi wa sallam through his grandson Hussein radiallahu anhu and traced through generations of scholars and saints based in the Hadramawt region of Yemen. The al Attas clan is among the most prominent Hadrami sayyid families, and members of this lineage spread over the centuries through the Indian Ocean world from Hadramawt to Singapore, Java, Malaya, and East Africa, establishing centres of Islamic learning, Sufi practice, and community leadership wherever they settled. Habib Hassan al Attas, whose memory this mosque preserves, contributed to the spiritual life of the Johor Muslim community through teaching, dakwah, and pastoral care, and this mosque continues his legacy of gentle Sufi orientated Shafi'i Sunni piety. The architecture reflects the Hadrami influence common to mosques associated with the Ba Alawi sayyids, featuring clean white walls, simple green domes, a dignified minaret, and a prayer hall adorned with calligraphy and lamps recalling the aesthetic of the mosques of Tarim and Seiwun in Yemen. The interior is quiet and contemplative, the carpets of high quality, the mihrab modestly decorated, and the mimbar simple and elegant. The mosque hosts regular gatherings in the Ba Alawi tradition including the weekly reading of Ratib al Haddad, the monthly observance of the Mawlid Simt al Durar, and annual commemorations of the urs of notable awliya. During Ramadan the nightly tarawih prayers and daily Qur'an recitation fill the mosque with light, and the beautiful Yemeni style qasidah nasheed sung during special gatherings evoke the spiritual atmosphere of Hadramawt transplanted to the Malay world with grace and devotion. Gatherings in the Ba Alawi tradition at Habib Hassan al Attas Mosque conclude with the traditional Hadrami greeting in which worshippers exchange words of peace and remembrance, and often continue over light refreshments where senior members of the community share anecdotes of the Hadrami sayyid tradition and the experiences of elder relatives who knew saints of the past personally, allowing young attendees to feel the living continuity of this spiritual lineage from Hadramawt across the Indian Ocean to Johor Bahru.
