Tentang

Commissioned in honour of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa of the ruling Bahraini dynasty, this congregational mosque in Jidd Hafs serves the dense residential neighbourhoods that spread westward from Manama towards the Budaiya highway. Bahrain's Al Khalifa family has governed the archipelago since the late eighteenth century, tracing its origins to the Bani Utub migration from central Arabia, and its members have patronised mosques, schools and hospitals across the kingdom as part of a long tradition of public endowment. Jidd Hafs itself is one of the oldest inhabited quarters outside Manama proper, a once agricultural village whose palm groves have given way to modern streets and family villas. Bahrain's Islamic heritage is layered and old, reaching back to the letter of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, to al Mundhir ibn Sawa, the ruler of the islands who embraced the faith before the Prophet's passing. Architecturally the mosque combines Gulf vernacular with contemporary Bahraini design, featuring pale limestone cladding, a central dome raised on an octagonal drum, four slim minarets marking the corners of the forecourt and generous shaded arcades. The mihrab is lined with hand cut ceramic in cobalt and turquoise, the mimbar rises in five carved cedar steps, and the main hall accommodates around twelve hundred worshippers with a separate women's section accessed from the eastern side. Daily prayers follow the times published by the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf, Jumu'ah sermons are delivered in Arabic with printed summaries available in English and Urdu for guest workers, and Ramadan evenings host tarawih led by invited huffaz from around the Gulf. Eid mornings fill the forecourt with families in freshly pressed thobes. Visitors should dress modestly, leave shoes on angled wooden shelves and silence mobile phones. Landmarks within reach include the Qal'at al Bahrain archaeological site, the Beit al Qur'an museum, the Bahrain National Museum and the vast date palm oasis of A'ali. The mosque welcomes worshippers and travellers with the quiet dignity characteristic of Bahraini civic architecture. An adjacent cemetery holds the graves of several community elders, and visitors on Eid mornings customarily walk there after the salah to recite the Fatihah for their departed, a local practice that reflects the Emirati weaving of family memory into the daily rhythm of worship around the wider greater Manama residential belt.
