About

Nestled in the old village of Jid Hafs on the island of Bahrain, Masjid al Sayyid Amir Ashraf, also known as al Watiyyah and Qadam al Imam al Mahdi, carries a layered identity that ties the community to stories of devotion and pilgrimage preserved over many generations. Bahrain itself, whose name means the place of two seas, has been a centre of pearl diving and maritime trade for more than four thousand years, dating from the Dilmun civilisation mentioned in Sumerian cuneiform tablets. Its islands have welcomed Muslim settlers since the lifetime of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Jid Hafs is a historic quarter on the northern coast of Bahrain, its date palm gardens and coral stone homes preserving a village atmosphere despite the growth of the modern capital Manama nearby. The local name al Watiyyah refers to a low lying area, while the title Qadam al Imam al Mahdi commemorates the hope cherished by many Bahrainis for the appearance of the awaited Mahdi whose coming was foretold by the Prophet in well known narrations and whose footprint some pious traditions connect to visits made by earlier generations to this humble prayer site. The architecture follows the coral stone and plaster tradition typical of old Bahraini villages. Thick walls, a flat roof with wooden beams made from imported East African timber, carved doors of teak, decorative niches for lamps, and a central courtyard with a small ablution tank reflect techniques inherited from the Dilmun and early Islamic builders. Inside, patterned carpets, framed calligraphy, and a simple wooden minbar create an atmosphere of quiet reverence suitable for both daily prayer and the gatherings that take place during Muharram and Ramadan each year. Accurate daily prayer times for Masjid al Sayyid Amir Ashraf in Jid Hafs, its address, a clear map pin, and visitor notes can be found on this page by Bahraini residents, pilgrims to the historical sites of the island, and travellers from elsewhere in the Gulf. Bahrain is famous for its Tree of Life in the desert near Jebel Dukhan, for the Qal'at al Bahrain UNESCO site, and for the pearl trail through the old quarters of Muharraq. Worshippers here often walk along the palm shaded lanes after Isha, pausing at neighbours' majlises to drink cardamom coffee poured from a polished brass dallah and to share gentle Bahraini news of families, markets, and boats returning home.
