Tentang
Attached to the Theology Faculty of Ege University in the Karabağlar district of Izmir, Hacı Fatma Tatari Camii bears the name of a pious benefactress whose pilgrimage to Makkah earned her the respected honorific Hacı. Izmir itself is the third largest city in Turkey, ancient Smyrna on the Aegean coast whose harbour has welcomed ships since Greek antiquity, and whose Ottoman era transformed it into a cosmopolitan trading metropolis whose grand bazaars, kulliyes, and synagogues reflected the city's multicultural past. The Ilahiyat Fakultesi, or Theology Faculty, forms part of the large public university system that trains imams, Qur'an teachers, religious studies scholars, and specialists in Islamic law and theology who go on to serve across Turkey and beyond. The presence of a campus masjid under the patronage of a benefactress like Hacı Fatma Tatari continues the deep Turkish tradition of women endowing religious institutions, a practice that has produced some of the grandest masajid of the Ottoman Empire including those of Hurrem Sultan and Mihrimah Sultan. Architecturally the masjid expresses a restrained contemporary Turkish idiom, a single domed prayer hall faced in pale stone, a slender pencil minaret rising against the pine covered ridges above the campus, a shaded son cemaat portico for worshippers removing shoes, and an interior finished with subtle geometric tilework around the mihrab. Painted rumi floral motifs in soft blues adorn the dome, the mimbar is carved from chestnut, and the carpets are woven in Izmir cooperatives. The five daily salawat use the Diyanet roster, Jumu'ah khutbahs include thematic reflections appropriate to a university setting, and Ramadan brings students together for iftars featuring Izmirli specialities such as boyoz pastry, kumru sandwiches, mucver courgette fritters, and sübye almond drinks. Eid mornings see the campus community gather before dispersing to homes across the city. Visitors to Izmir exploring the agora, Konak Square, the elevator on the historic hillside, or nearby Ephesus will find this masjid a graceful example of a Turkish academic devotional space. The campus masjid remains a calm refuge for students, faculty, and visiting scholars whose paths cross the Ege University theology faculty, offering the five daily prayers and weekly Jumu'ah congregations that sustain the spiritual foundation upon which serious religious study has always rested across the broader Islamic tradition.
